Child Development and Care
Exam board: NCFE
Childcare is a vocational based subject that is ideal for learners who are considering a career as an early years or childcare worker. It allows learners to experience the practical aspects of childcare as well as learning through taught sessions and the completion of two assignments and a multiple-choice exam.
It includes the knowledge and understanding of child development and well-being necessary for working with children in a variety of settings. It is aimed at a range of learners who wish to be introduced to childcare and development for children aged 0-5 years. It also gives learners an insight into their preferred learning styles and assists in developing their ability to study.
Content Overview
- Unit 1: An introduction to working with children aged 0-5 years
- Unit 2: Development and well-being 0-5 years
- Unit 3: Childcare and development 0-5 years
Assessment (students must achieve all three units):
- Unit 1: Written assignment
- Unit 2: Written assignment
- Unit 3: Multiple choice exam paper
Construction - Key Stage 4
Exam Board: WJEC Eduqas Award in Constructing the Built Environment
This qualification is designed for students who are interested in how things are constructed. You will use a range of hand tools and materials. You can select from a range of areas in construction for example: plumbing, joinery, electrics, painting and decorating.
Content Overview
There are three main units:
- Safety and security in construction.
- Using practical construction techniques.
- Understanding how to plan a construction project.
Assessment:
- 25% One two-hour timed assessment on how to plan a construction project.
- 50% Three practical assignments to demonstrate practical construction skills.
- 25% One exam to show your understanding of how to work safely and securely in construction.
Design Technology
Subject Leader: Miss C Shipley
Engineering - Key Stage 4
Exam Board: WJEC Level 1/2 in Engineering
This course is designed for students who are interested in engineering and would like to acquire knowledge and understanding about the engineering sector. The course is taught through three core units of work;
- Unit 1: To improve the design of an engineered product (25%).
- Until 2: To make a high quality engineered product (50%).
- Unit 3: External exam to assess problem solving skills (25%).
The core elements of environment awareness, engineering techniques and engineering principles are taught through a mixture of practical and written assignments in order to build students’ understanding.
Hair and Beauty
Exam Board: VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy
This qualification has been designed to use the context of Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy as a vehicle to support the learner to develop broad and comprehensive understanding of this sector but more importantly of core subject knowledge and study skills that will support their progression.
Content Overview
There are four main units:
- Understand the Hair and Beauty Sector
- Hair and Beauty research project
- Hair and Beauty Science
- Responding to a Hair and Beauty brief
Assessment:
- One external exam.
- Three externally set and internally moderated assignments.
- All four assessments must be passed to achieve the qualification.
Health & Social Care - Key Stage 4
Exam Board: Pearson Level 1/2 Technical Award in Health and Social Care
Health and Social Care is ideal for learners who are considering a career in Nursing or being a Care Worker. The course allows learners to experience the practical aspects of Health and Social Care in the UK.
The course covers:
Human Lifespan Development
- Aim: understand how we grow and develop throughout our lives.
- Assessment: internally assessed assignments Weighting: 30% of total course.
Health and Social Care Services and Values
- Aim: get to know how the Health and Social Care sector works and the care values that lie at the core of it.
- Assessment: internally assessed assignments Weighting: 30% of total course.
Health and Wellbeing
- Aim: help improve someone’s health and wellbeing.
- Assessment: externally assessed task, in which students create a health and wellbeing improvement plan for an individual, based on a brief Weighting: 40% of total course.
Hospitality and Catering
Exam Board: WJEC
This is a practical subject where you will learn new skills in food preparation.
The course has been designed to develop knowledge and understanding related to a range of hospitality and catering providers; how they operate and what they have to take into account to be successful.
Following the course, you will Understand ingredients and their functions in the body and when included in recipes. Develop some food preparation and cooking skills as well as transferable skills of problem-solving, organisation and time management, planning and communication. Learn about issues related to nutrition and food safety and how they affect successful hospitality and catering operations.
Assessment:
- Unit 1: External Assessment – The Hospitality and the Catering Industry
- Unit 2: Internal Controlled Assessment – Hospitality and Catering in Action
- Both units must be passed to obtain the qualification
